Paracetamol, ibuprofen, aspirin and topical gels — how to choose the right pain relief for you.
Paracetamol
A good first choice for mild to moderate pain and fever, generally well tolerated when taken as directed. Never combine multiple paracetamol-containing products.
Ibuprofen
An anti-inflammatory that can be especially helpful for muscular pain, period pain and inflammation, but isn't suitable for everyone — for example those with stomach ulcers or certain respiratory conditions.
Aspirin
Useful for pain, fever and mild inflammation in adults, but not suitable for anyone under 16 due to the risk of Reye's syndrome.
Topical gels and rubs
Products like anti-inflammatory gels or warming muscle rubs can target localised pain, such as back or muscle strains, with less effect on the rest of the body.
Always ask if unsure
If you take regular medication, are pregnant, or have an ongoing health condition, our pharmacist can help you choose the safest option.
